Spring is in the air, and like many boaters we are eager to get back out on the water to enjoy all that the Kawartha Lakes has to offer. With that being said when you are planning on launching your boat this spring there are some important factors to consider to ensure a safe and successful start to your boating season:
Key Considerations for Spring Boating
Weather and Lake Conditions
- Ice Melt: Confirm that ice has fully retreated from your local lake. Lingering ice can damage boats and create safety risks.
- Water Temperature: Early spring water remains cold (often below 10°C) Always wear a life jacket and dress in layers. A tumble into the water at these temperatures can be very dangerous! Remember that even on warm days, lakes can have dangerously cold water.
- Debris As the spring water levels rise , due to runoff and dams opening to control water levels up North, debris from shorelines can be pulled into the lake resulting in floating and partially submerged hazards. Logs, branches, construction materials, and dock parts are often seen in the lakes in the early spring and create
- Water Levels: High water levels from snowmelt may submerge docks, while low levels could expose rocks and “dead-headsˮ (submerged tree stumps). Verify conditions in advance by scouting out the lake or referring to online sources or social media. Parks Canada Water Management Updates
Boat Readiness and Maintenance
- Before heading out on your “maiden voyage” this spring be sure to check over all of the critical systems and components on your boat to ensure everything is in proper working order. Key things to check before launching include:
- Drain Plug(s) – are in good condition and installed properly
- Battery Voltage – batteries should be charged and maintain 12V of power ( increasing typically to around 14V once the motor is running and alternator is powering it). Charge or replace batteries if needed.
- Fuel – Ensure your tank is full and top up with fresh fuel if you can.
- Waterpump Impeller – ensure it has been replaced as per your boats maintenance schedule and during the first start ensure it is pumping water and the boats motor is cooling properly.
- Blower and bilge pump working properly ( if equipped)
- Safety Equipment – ensure everything is in the boat, working properly and accessible.
